FHE: Service

This week we took a break from our Follow the Prophet Theme, because I got a phone call reminding me that I'd signed up to donate some items to our Relief Society service project. We rounded up all the items and loaded them and the boys up in the wagon. We walked to the house of a member of the Relief Society presidency and dropped off the items. Then we walked around the block and talked to the boys about what service was. We also sang them some songs about service. Give Said the Little Stream was the first one that came to mind. Here are the lyrics I found online...we only knew the first verse, but I liked the others when I saw them so I'm including them.

Give Said the Little Stream

Give said the little stream

Give, oh give
Give, oh give
Give said the little stream
As it hurried down the hill
I'm small I know but wherever I go
The grass grows greener still

Give said the little rain
Give, oh give
Give, oh give
Give said the little rain
As it fell upon the flowers
I'll raise their weary heads again
As it fell upon the flowers

Singing, singing all the day
Give away, oh give away
Singing, singing all the day
Give, oh give away

Give what is in your heart
Give away, Give away
Give what is in your heart
And your heart will ever live

Laugh when you're filled with joy
Laugh away, laugh away
Laugh when you're filled with joy
For laughing's giving too

Give all you've got to give
Give away, give away
Give all you've got to give

Sing when your heart is full
Sing away, sing away
Sing when your heart is full
For singing's giving too

The other song we sang was, I Want to be Kind to Everyone, lyrics:

I Want to be Kind to Everyone

I want to be kind to everyone
For that is right you see
So I say to myself remember this
Kindness begins with me

Then it started to rain on us, and we still had about a block to go, so while we walked we sang songs about the rain.

It's raining; it's pouring.
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and bumped his head,
And he couldn't get up in the morning.

I thought it would be fun to teach the boys the If All the Raindrops song. I started singing, expecting Aaron to join in. Turns out he's never heard the song in his life. He kept looking at me like I was a psycho. Oh well, he's stuck with me now. :)

If all the raindrops
Were lemondrops and gumdrops
Oh, what a rain that would be!
Standing outside, with my mouth open wide
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
If all the raindrops
Were lemondrops and gumdrops
Oh, what a rain that would be!

If all the snowflakes
Were candy bars and milkshakes
Oh, what a snow that would be!
Standing outside, with my mouth open wide
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
If all the snowflakes
Were candy bars and milkshakes
Oh, what a snow that would be!

If all the sunbeams
Were bubblegum and ice cream
Oh, what a sun that would be!
Standing outside, with my mouth open wide
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
If all the sunbeams
Were bubblegum and ice cream
Oh, what a sun that would be!

That is my favorite primary song! What a creative idea :-)

I sang the raindrops song and Robert had never heard of it either? Was it a Hooper Elementary thing? A Bev's pre-school thing (didn't you go to Bev's?), I swear Barney sings it. Anyway, I'm glad you remember that song too. :)

You are really good at turning every day things into teaching moments! I need to work on that. And I didn't know that last song had a third verse. I will have to remember that.
