Our home school group does what they call Friday Fun Classes every Friday. Basically, we all meet together at a building in Payson, and divide up into age groups, and the Moms take turns teaching classes. Each age group has three classes that are about an hour long that they attend each week. It's fun and the kids love it. First hour I teach the 4-6 year olds, which is Lincoln's class. Normally, we focus on the alphabet and beginning reading, but since this was the last week before Christmas, I decided to do a Christmas themed lesson instead, and I think the kids enjoyed changing it up a little.
First we did these cool (and SUPER easy! And by easy I mean, very little prep, aside from gathering the materials, and NO mess. My kind of craft.) beaded candy cane ornaments. I got the idea off of Pinterest. It's a good fine motor skill, turns out really cute, and is great for a wide age range of kids. Here's how Lincoln's turned out. I think later this week, I'll use the extra beads and have Ivan and Adelia do some too.
For the second activity we played a Christmas Tree decorating game with M&Ms. Also a Pinterest find. Basically, I gave each student a mat with squares and a Christmas tree on it, and a cup full of M&Ms. The kids had to sort the M&Ms into the little squares by color. Then, they took turns drawing a card. On each card it told you how many and what color of M&M to put on the tree to decorate it. A great game for sorting and counting. The kids loved it, and of course it didn't hurt that they got to eat the M&Ms when they were through. :)
