The food was prepped and frozen. The clothes were packed. The camping gear was laid out neatly in the living room. All that was left to do was load it all up in the van, pass out the juice and muffins, and be on our way. Even with all that, we still got out the door an hour later than intended. But no matter, rush hour was practically non-existent, and we were headed to the Redwoods!
We have literally been planning this trip since about October. Aaron's parents and all of his siblings are coming too. Aaron and I spent more than a few nights online looking up things to do in the area, making a menu and a calendar, checking the weather, and writing a list of things not to forget. We are so pumped for this trip! It's been on my bucket list for a very long time.
Our first stop occurred about 15 minutes into the drive, before we'd even left Utah County. Adelia had to pee. We stopped 37 more unplanned times for this exact same reason. Gotta love kids with small bladders.
The Bonneville Salt Flats was probably our most interesting stop. The kids were amazed at the piles of salt that looked like snow. They talked about them for the whole trip.
Around lunch time we stopped in Winnemucca, NV, which is about half way to Klamath Falls, OR where we were planning on spending the night. Winnemucca had a cool, old-school metal playground so we let the kids play for 30 minutes or so while we made sandwiches. The kids were most impressed with the merry-go-round.
Besides stopping so many times, the drive went without a hitch. We listened to a good portion of The Phantom Toll Booth, listened to some music, called Gramma Tam to check in on Ruby, (Rue is staying at my mom's while we're gone.) and watched Incredibles. We pulled into Klamath Falls around 8:00pm Pacific Time, grabbed some KFC, and checked into our hotel room at the Days-Inn. Over-all it was as good as any all-day driving day can be. Ollie wins the award for best traveler. He stayed happy the whole time, and was the only one who took a nap. :)
