The Continental Breakfast was a genius invention. And the one at our hotel was of the awesome variety. My kids were so impressed that they could have waffles AND cereal AND hot chocolate all in one sitting. :)
We took our time this morning and had a nice slow breakfast and got everyone showered. I did Adelia's hair in a bunch of fancy connected pigtails, so that we wouldn't have to do her hair for the next several days. Then we got in the car and made our way to Crescent City, CA, a town on the coast near the redwoods where our KOA camp ground was located.
The drive was so incredibly awesome and beautiful, and made up completely for all of the boring and ugly on I-80 yesterday. For reals check out these trees! We're not in UT anymore Toto.
Remember our trip to Mt Rushmore last year, where I ranted and raved about how freakin' awesome our two bedroom KOA cabin was? Good. Because the cabin we stayed in this time was equally awesome. No joke, it is THEE way to camp with children, I'm just sayin'. Everyone sleeps, which just makes all of our lives so much better.
Here is our own little cabin in the big woods. (It seriously felt like something straight out of a Laura Ingles Wilder book.) Home for the next week:
Since none of our extended family would be arriving until later, we decided to drive into Crescent City and check out the coast and maybe walk down the pier. When we got there the rain had picked up quite a bit. No worries, we thought, we'll just take umbrellas with us to the beach. We got out of the car and attempted to put up the umbrellas, but they immediately flipped inside out from the force of the wind. Yikes. BUT, it was my kids' first view of the ocean*, and we weren't going to give up without a fight. Ha! We all got out, and walked backwards down to the beach so the sand wouldn't sting our eyes to death. We were soaked in a matter of seconds. It was so ridiculous that I just laughed my head off like a lunatic, made everyone pose really quick for a picture by a pile of seaweed, and then let everyone run back to the van. Life's all about making memories, right? And we will never forget the kids' first experience with the ocean.
*Lincoln and Ivan have been to the coast before, but they were so little they don't remember. So for all intents and purposes, this was their first time.
It was forecast to rain for all our trip, and after our rather damp experience at the coast, and knowing we had to cook all our dinners over the fire; we headed to Walmart to buy a second tarp, an extra rope, and another pair of pants for Ollie.
Once we took care of those things, we headed back to our cabin. The kids ran through the trees and had the time of their lives climbing and hiding on and around them. Aaron set up tarps over our picnic table and fire pit area, so that we'd have a couple of dry places to sit. I helped. :) The rain did not let up, but I'm happy to say, thanks to my holding an umbrella over the fire and skillet, and Aaron squirting an abundance of lighter fluid on the wood, we were able to cook our taco soup and have dinner without a hitch.
