I listen better when my hands are busy, so generally I like to turn the volume up loud on the TV and busy myself in the kitchen. This year I decided to give homemade doughnuts a try. It was awesome! They were so tasty good, I may never be able to buy a doughnut from a bakery again. (Ok, that's probably a lie, because the bakery is convenient, but I'll always know that homemade tastes better.) Aaron and the kids helped my decorate them. And then in between sessions of Conference we went around the neighborhood and shared fresh homemade doughnuts with our friends. I hope doughnut making is a tradition we keep up year after year. I dated a guy in college once who went home every Conference weekend just because his mom made homemade doughnuts. I want to be that mom. I'm the kind of person who associates good food with holidays, traditions, and closeness. I want to give that to my kids. If when my kids think of Conference they think of being well fed both physically and spiritually then I think Conference will be a highlight in their lives. Something they look forward to. A special weekend, that is different from all the others. That's the goal.
Sunday, the kids were having a little trouble holding still, so I spread out the butcher paper on the table and told them to try and draw the things they were hearing about in the talks. Most of the kids just drew whatever they wanted...but every now and again I saw some drawings of temples, missionaries, and someone playing the organ. So I think it was a good outlet.
Ivan drew this awesome picture of himself, Lincoln, and Aaron going to priesthood session (even though Lincoln and Ivan aren't old enough for priesthood session yet, I'm glad they notice that Aaron goes, and that they look forward to being able to go with him in the future.
I was touched by President Monson's talk on Being and Example and a Light. He says, "My brothers and Sisters, our opportunities to shine surround us each day, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. As we follow the example of the Savior, ours will be the opportunity to be a light in the lives of others, whether they be our own family members and friends, our co-workers, mere acquaintances, or total strangers." This is something I can do from right here, where I'm already at. I don't have to go somewhere else, or be something else... but from my own sphere I can lift. I can shine. It might not be in a big way, but I can focus on, and look for those opportunities. As a reminder to be more observant, I made this (using an app called Typorama) and set it as my lock screen on my phone.
