FHE: Feed My Sheep
Tonight for FHE, we talked about service. For the opening song, we sang Give Said the Little Stream, which we all know the first verse really well, but we tried to work on learning the next two verses. I especially like the third verse about Jesus.
After the song, I asked Lincoln if he knew what another word for giving was. He couldn't think of anything, so I told him that helping was another word for giving. I asked him what are some things that he does to help. He told me that he helps make dinner in the kitchen, and that he helps pick up his toys. I told him yes, and that he was a very good helper. Then I told him that another word for being a helper was service. I told him that there was a King named Benjamin in the Book of Mormon who taught about giving service. I told Lincoln that he was going to be King Benjamin, and I put a crown (from Burger King) on his head. I printed out this picture and showed Linc King Benjamin standing on the really tall tower teaching all of his people how they could be good helpers. I had Linc stand on the couch with his crown on and hold up the picture while Aaron gave a good summary of Mosiah 2: 9-18 that Lincoln could understand, with a major emphasis on verse 17:
17 And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.
Aaron explained to Lincoln that when he helps other people, he is really helping our Heavenly Father. Lincoln said, "I help Jesus make dinner?" And we told him yes, that when he helps with dinner, he his helping our Heavenly Father and Jesus.
Then we showed him this video from the Friend website.
LDS.org - Friend Article - For Little Friends, April 2010
It's about a little girl whose mom is making a pie for a sick neighbor. The mother tells the little girl that Jesus told Peter to "Feed my sheep." and that means that we should help each other. The little girl decided that she could show her sick neighbor that she loved her by coloring a get well card for her.
After the video we played a game. I visited this website that has free body part coloring pages. I copied eight different body parts and pasted them into a word document and resized them to be about the same size as a deck of playing cards. Then I printed them out, cut them out, and laminated them with packaging tape (only because I plan on saving them and the tape Ivan-slobber proofs them). For our game, we each took turns picking a card, and then we had to tell of a way we could use the body part we'd picked to do a service. For example, if I picked mouth I could say, I could use my mouth to read someone a story, or to give someone a smile, or to tell someone about the gospel. Lincoln liked the game, even though Aaron and I had to help him a lot to come up with the answers. But I think this lesson is one we could use again in a year or so. It went pretty well.
