Hot Air Balloons, Taketombo, Sharks, and some other School Stuff

Whew, I feel like I’ve been a little behind on posting about school stuff. We’re still doing school, I promise. It just hasn’t been on my top priority to post about list. I’ve been really enjoying the Energy Profiling stuff, and feel like I’ve used most of my blogging time to write about it. But school is still happening. And here’s some of what we’ve been up to for the last little while…

Hot Air Balloons.

We did a section on Hot Air Balloons in our History of Flight Unit. These ones that we made, were a lot easier than the trash bag version Aaron made with the kids last July. Basically, you take a cellophane bag, some string and cupcake liner, tape them all together, and get the blow dryer out to make it go up. We talked about warm air, and how when air is warm the molecules spread out to make it lighter than cold air, and that’s why warm air rises and makes the balloon go up. My blow dryer’s low setting is still quite powerful, so our balloons went up probably a little faster than they should have. But we still got the point. Lincoln spent all of quiet time with this project. Winner.

Taketombo.

We started another unit out of History of Flight about the Wright brothers, and gliders. We learned that a glider is anything with wings that is not powered by an engine. We made a Taketombo, or a Bamboo Dragonfly, which is similar to a toy the Wright brothers would have played with as children. It’s pretty cool. You spin it between your hands and let it go, and then it helicopters down to the ground. Another successful activity that kept Lincoln occupied for a solid hour. I’m really liking our book!

Sharks.

And we’ve still been having Science Club. We had an awesome field trip to Cabella’s to look at the fish in their aquarium. And last week Wynter taught the funnest lesson about sharks. Lots of cool things to glue in our notebooks. I am still loving our notebooks, btw. So great for keeping track of everything!

Preschool Co-op.

Preschool is still going well. I had my turn to teach a couple weeks ago. I had President’s Day and Letter R. For Presidents Day, we read a couple stories about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Then we made a handprint cherry tree painting, and talked about the story of George cutting down his father’s cherry tree and how he could not tell a lie. Then we made log cabins out of pretzel sticks and glued a penny inside to show that Abraham Lincoln lived in a log cabin. We learned a fun song about how the two presidents dressed. And we played the game This is the Way The Ladies Ride, because Washington liked to ride horses.

For Letter R, we talked about red things, and painted a red R. We also talked about roads, and drove cars on our road rug. Then we did a road cutting sheet. And read a couple of books about things that started with R.

Math.

We’ve done some fun Math things last little while. Money being the main one. Lincoln really likes money, and was excited that he got to work with real money to do his problems. He’s also learned how to borrow in subtraction, which he doesn’t think is as fun as money, but I think it’s cool that he’s learning it. :) We’ve finished Singapore level 1B and have moved on to Singapore level 2A. So far the fast moving pace has been good for Linc. He’s still catching onto things quickly, showing me that he can do then, and ready to move on, at the pace the book is going. At some point, when he gets stuck, we’ll have to shift to a different curriculum that offers more review at a slower pace. But for now this is working nicely for us.

Ollie is Probably a Dominant Type 2

I decided to go through my It’s Just My Nature book, and make a bulleted list for each person in our family of the characteristics they have of each of the four Types. I thought having this visual would be interesting and telling. I am going to do one post per family member so that it’s not a gigantic long post. I’ll go oldest to youngest. :)

Ollie- It’s hard to do this for Ollie, because he’s just a baby. I need to do this with The Child Whisperer, and I’d probably get better results. Anyways, I THINK Ollie is a dominant Type 2 because he has always been very peaceful and calm, not still like a Type 4 though. I think his secondary is something with a higher energy, like 3 or 1. We’ll see.

Krystal is Dominant Type 3

I decided to go through my It’s Just My Nature book, and make a bulleted list for each person in our family of the characteristics they have of each of the four Types. I thought having this visual would be interesting and telling. I am going to do one post per family member so that it’s not a gigantic long post. I’ll go oldest to youngest. :)

Krystal – I have decided that my secondary is either a 2 or a 4. Based on this list it should be a 4, but after watching a lot of video clips, and reading examples on The Carol Blog, I actually feel like I identify more with the 2 as my secondary. But the jury is still out.

Type 1

  • You have a tendency to give yourself excuses and make up stories as to why you could not follow through.
  • A Type 1 voice is a higher pitch and can even sound squeaky.
  • Word portrait: Impulsive

Type 2

  • Acting appropriately so as not to cause any discomfort for others
  • Wearing comfortable clothing
  • Consuming comfortable food
  • Comfort as their number one priority when it comes to choosing an article of clothing

  • You prefer to observe rather than participate in larger social settings.
  • You like to be emotionally connected with people, placed, or things. Sentimental.
  • You tend to be on time due to your ability to make a plan and stick to it.
  • Word Portrait: Appropriate, Cautious, Comfortable, Composed, Contemplative, In control, Understanding

Type 3

  • Results are a priority in how you approach life. Action that creates results and change are important to you.
  • Your motive in your actions is to create a result that sets an impression that remains a long time. Ironically, you are not innately motivated to do what you do to impress others.
  • When you have your mind set on your results, your inner mantra is to do whatever it takes and you are willing to roll up your sleeves, get to work, and just get things done.
  • Willing to burn the candle at both ends.
  • Type 3 energy have the capacity to burn ourselves out more quickly than any other energy type, due to our swift, determined movement, which is fueled by our pronounced, substantial energy output.
  • Type 3 energy love finishing things they start. You actually only start something that you are motivated to finish, so you can experience the result of your actions. And you don’t just start one thing. You have the capacity to push several things along at a time and make sure they all get done.
  • A typical morning would look like this: taking a shower, starting to get dressed, abruptly stopping to make the bed, moving to the kitchen to start loading the dishwasher, back to dressing, abruptly moving to the bed again, kitchen, dressing, -- keeping a lot of plates spinning until all the tasks are finished.
  • If you traced a Type 3 movement, it would look like a lot of intersecting lines making geometric shapes, fast angles, and compartments.
  • People with Type 3 energy are known to move it along, and get rid of things if they do not have any practical resourceful value to them.
  • You jump in and take action quickly.
  • You can change focus abruptly, but you always come back to what you started. You are very aware of what has gone unfinished. Noticing something else can spur you into action and causes an abrupt change of focus.
  • It is important that you acknowledge and allow your energy to have a swift, pushing nature. If you try to soften your movement and override it with apologies, it can be like a burning furnace that has no vent and will suddenly go into reactive mode – what we call rage.
  • You may subconsciously create scenarios where you say and do things just to get a reaction out of people, and most of the time it appears to be contentious.
  • You can act before all the details are in place, often feeling like so many details are unnecessary as you have a deep sense of confidence and sureness about achieving success.
  • You move other people into action easily. If someone is feeling down, you will think of something to do to help the person change focus or what you can do to help fix it. You move forward with intent determination.
  • You can burn out by getting too much going on, making too many commitments, and taking action too soon.
  • Type 3 energy is very passionate. Whenever you are bent on carrying out your plans, or find opposition, you are filled with passionate excitement. You can become addicted to action! If someone challenges you or suggests you can’t do what you are desiring, you most likely are thinking, “Oh yeah? Just watch me!” You are very self-confident and self-reliant and tend to take success for granted because you expect it.
  • Your thoughts and feelings are swift and deliberate.
  • You compartmentalize things in your head and can move from one compartment to the next easily, without losing concentration because it all has a purpose to you.

You may be known for getting rid of things too quickly.
  • You prefer your surroundings to be casual, natural, and rich in color and texture.
  • Face shape: angular facial planes
  • Nose: Angular, beak, knobby

  • If someone tries to be an uninvited authority over you, you think in your mind, “I didn’t ask you to tell me what to do or how to do it.”
  • You do not like being put in the limelight spontaneously.
  • You prefer to choose who you would like to interact with and whom you invite into your personal space.
  • You are private.

  • You do not like being put on the spot spontaneously, but are eager to express yourself before a group if you have some purpose in view.

Aaron is a Dominant Type 2

I decided to go through my It’s Just My Nature book, and make a bulleted list for each person in our family of the characteristics they have of each of the four Types. I thought having this visual would be interesting and telling. I am going to do one post per family member so that it’s not a gigantic long post. I’ll go oldest to youngest. :)

Aaron- I had Aaron read through all of these to make sure he agreed with everything I labeled him as. He does. There may be other things in the book that I didn’t write down, that he would choose to put down for himself, but so far this is a really good start for him.

Type 1

  • Word Portrait: Easy going, generous, industrious, intelligent, brilliant

Type 2

  • It is necessary for you to ask the questions and lead out with a degree of skepticism.
  • Asking questions and gathering details is so prominent in your natural expression that it is necessary for you to give yourself time to ask the questions and gather details. Quiet–The Fine Line

thekidsarequiet

Usually for me, it’s the latter. For example:

The other day Adelia found my nail polish while I was busy making lunch. She got it all over herself, and some on the carpet. Thank goodness for Facebook and Windex. I asked FB for help, someone immediately replied “Windex!” So I used it, and it came out pretty well. Who’d of thought?

Lincoln's New Favorite

Ever since we finished reading Harry Potter, Lincoln has been really interested in chess. He and Aaron play a game every day or so. Linc is getting pretty good.

An Obsession You’re Dyeing to Try

Meet my latest obsession:

vday and bday 109

RIT fabric dye, come to Mama! I’ve been having a blast with these little boxes lately. But first, some back story, so that when you decide I’m off my rocker, you’ll at least know why. ;)

A friend of mine recommended the book The Child Whisperer by Carol Tuttle to me. Basically, it’s a parenting book that categorizes children (and everything, really) into four Types, based on their personality, movement, facial features, etc., and then gives parenting ideas based on which Type your child falls under. It was a great book, I highly recommend it. But that’s not what this post is about.

Once I found out my children’s Types, I was really curious to know mine. So, I read another book by Carol Tuttle called It’s Just My Nature. Which was very helpful in figuring out myself. That book lead me to a third book by Carol called Dressing Your Truth, which is basically a fashion guide based on the Type system. I have loved this system, and for the first time in my life, feel like I have a clue about my own fashion. It’s been great. And for more information about the system, and a free 8-course video on it, look here.

And finally, on to the point of this post…now that I know what colors, textures, and styles I’m supposed to wear, it’s time to overhaul my wardrobe. I can’t afford to go out and spend a million dollars on clothes, so I experimented with the next best thing. Fabric dye.

That sounds really final, doesn’t it? Haha! It is, but it’s also a lot easier than you might think. I started out really easy, by dirtying up some jeans.

What you’ll need

  • a pair of jeans
  • some thick rubber gloves
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • something to stir with that you don’t care about,  I use the broken off end of a wooden broom handle
  • a 5 gallon bucket that you don’t care about (you can get them from WalMart for like $5)
  • RIT powder dye, in the colors  you want

Step 1

Boil 28 cups of water in a large pot on the stove.

Step 2

Pour boiling water into 5 gallon bucket. Take your bucket in the garage, or outside onto a surface you don’t care if it gets dye spilled on it, just in case. Put on your gloves. Add Salt. Add Dye. Stir well, and allow to sit until the dye has dissolved (about 5 minutes.)

Dye recipe for dirty jeans:

1 pkg. Tan for dark jeans

1 – 2 tsp Golden Yellow

½ tsp Dark Brown

(use less Golden Yellow for lighter jeans)

Step 3

Get your jeans sopping wet in the sink.

Step 4

Put jeans into dye mixture, and stir with wooden stick for 15-30 minutes, depending on how dark you want the dye to set, You want the clothes to be moving pretty much the entire time they’re in the dye, so that they dye evenly.

Step 5

Wring out the clothing items. Then move them to a sink (stainless steel, the dye will stain a porcelain sink) and rinse with warm water. Then again with cold water, until the water runs clear. This will help the dye set.

Step 6

Wash clothing in washing machine on cold, with a 1/2 cup vinegar. Dry in the dryer, or hang to dry.

Ta-da! Dirty jeans.

Here’s what they look like on.

I’ve been pretty much dying clothes like crazy since I discovered this. Here a few other helpful tips.

  • Only dye white, or really light colors.
  • Natural fibers dye the best.
  • You can dispose of your dye water down a stainless steel sink, RIT brand is environmentally friendly.
  • The best place to order the colors you want is Amazon.
  • I’ve done a couple more color combos that I’ll share with you.

Bittersweet Recipe – comes out kind of a bright red color, it’s beautiful, but I didn’t take any pics, sorry!

1 pkg Golden Yellow.......1 Tbsp Scarlet

Peacock Blue Recipe – For this one I tried the liquid dye, so these amounts are for liquid, not powder. Same directions as above though. I also tried a grey sweater, it stayed gray but had a blue tint to it.

1/2 c. Royal Blue.......1 Tbsp. Kelly Green

Rust Recipe – This one has probably been my favorite so far.

1 pkg Tangerine..............1 Tbsp Cocoa Brown

Notice how much better this cardigan looks in rust.
